Non-Return Dampers

Reverse airflow through marine and industrial duct systems introduces contaminated air into clean zones, defeats fire-rated barriers, and disrupts pressurization in classified areas. Non-return dampers stop it passively.

Your non-return damper spec depends on duct pressure rating, corrosion exposure, temperature range, and hazardous area classification.

Knape Associates supplies non-return dampers in stainless steel, galvanized steel, and carbon steel construction with ATEX and IECEx certification for offshore and classified environments.

You get application engineering before quoting and access to multiple manufacturer lines through one purchase order.

Non-Return Damper Configurations

Configuration Construction Application
Rectangular non-return damper Stainless steel 304L/316L, parallel blade, continuously welded Marine vessel ventilation, engine room exhaust
Circular non-return damper Galvanized or stainless steel, gravity-operated blades Offshore platform ductwork, industrial exhaust
ATEX/IECEx certified non-return damper 316L stainless, explosion-proof rated Hazardous area ventilation, classified process zones
High-pressure non-return damper Heavy-gauge steel, reinforced frame, rated to 5,000 Pa Gas-tight ventilation systems, pressurized compartments
High-temperature non-return damper Stainless steel with Viton seals, rated to 180°C Heated exhaust duct systems, engine casing ventilation

Rectangular units accommodate widths from 150 mm to 1,200 mm and heights from 150 mm to 1,400 mm. Circular models range from 100 mm to 1,250 mm diameter. Modular construction handles larger openings up to 2,400 mm x 2,800 mm.

How Non-Return Dampers Work

  • Gravity-operated parallel blades open when positive duct pressure exceeds the counterweight setting (starting at 30 Pa)
  • When pressure drops or reverses, blades close against integrated silicone seals
  • No actuators, no motors, no electrical power required
  • Leakage rated up to Class 2 per EN 1751:2014

Marine and Offshore Applications

Vessel Ventilation Zone Separation

Engine room supply and exhaust systems pair marine duty fans with non-return dampers to prevent contaminated air from entering accommodation zones during fan shutdowns or pressure reversals.

Cargo hold ventilation relies on them to maintain compartment pressurization and prevent cross-contamination between spaces.

Offshore Platform and Emergency Systems

Emergency ventilation systems require non-return dampers to keep escape routes and safe areas pressurized during fire or gas release events.

On offshore platforms, classified area ventilation pairs non-return dampers with gas-tight shut-off dampers and A60 fire-rated dampers to create layered zone protection. SOLAS, IMO, and classification society requirements govern damper placement, leakage ratings, and material selection.

Non-Return Dampers vs Backdraft Dampers

Non-return dampers and backdraft dampers both prevent reverse airflow through ductwork. The difference is application severity.

Backdraft dampers are specified for commercial HVAC systems where backflow is a comfort and efficiency issue. Aluminum blades, lighter construction, lower pressure ratings.

Non-return dampers are specified for marine, offshore, and industrial systems where backflow is a safety issue. Stainless steel construction, pressure ratings up to 5,000 Pa, ATEX certification, and leakage ratings tested to EN 1751.

Why Source Through a Multi-Manufacturer Distributor

A single manufacturer carries one product line. If their lead time stretches to 14 weeks or their configuration does not match your area classification, you start over with a new vendor.

We source non-return dampers from multiple manufacturers. Your spec stays intact and your schedule holds even when one line is backed up.

Our engineering team reviews your area classification drawings, duct pressure requirements, and corrosion exposure before quoting. You get a non-return damper spec matched to your application, not a catalog selection.

One purchase order, one point of contact, 75+ years of manufacturer relationships behind it. Call 713-467-2777.
