How to Select the Right United Enertech Louver
Start here: What is your primary design or environmental constraint?
- Project in an HVHZ or Coastal Region?
→ Hurricane Louvers (Model D-HV-5) - FEMA 361 Safe Room or Shelter?
→ FEMA Louvers (Model FEMA-5) - Noise Ordinance or Generator Room?
→ Acoustical Louvers (Model XL-4) - Critical Data/Electric Room?
→ Wind-Driven Rain Louvers (Model WDV-130) - Need Seasonal Airflow Shut-off?
→ Adjustable or Combination Louvers - General Intake or Exhaust?
→ Fixed Louvers (Model FL-D-4)
United Enertech Fixed Louvers
Stationary louvers are the industry baseline for intake and exhaust. The United Enertech
FL-D-4 is the premier 4-inch drainable model, engineered for
high-performance moisture management.
- Frame Depth: 4″ frame.
- Free Area: 50%
(For a standard 48″ × 48″ louver: 8.0 sq. ft. net free area). - Pressure Drop:
0.08″ w.g. @ 500 FPM; 0.31″ w.g. @ 1000 FPM. - Sound Data: STC 0 – 2 (Minimal sound attenuation).
Specifying a "4-inch louver" without defining the mounting method (Channel vs. Flange) is a frequent cause of shop drawing rejection. Clarify if the louver sits inside the masonry opening or is face-mounted to the building envelope.
⚠️ Selection Gotcha
United Enertech Adjustable Louvers
The United Enertech AFL-D-4 features pivotable blades with high-performance
seals, allowing for manual or motorized airflow regulation.
- Frame Depth: 4″ frame
(requires additional clearance for actuator linkage). - Leakage: AMCA Class 1A rated when closed.
- Actuation: Factory-mounted Belimo or Honeywell actuators available.
United Enertech Combination Louvers
The United Enertech CFL-D-4 integrates a stationary front louver with an
operable rear damper within a single 4-inch frame.
- Space Advantage:
Saves 4″ of interior wall depth compared to separate louver and damper rough-ins. - Design Efficiency:
Maintains a clean, uniform fixed-louver aesthetic on the exterior while providing
100% shut-off capability.
United Enertech Acoustical Louvers
The United Enertech XL-4 utilizes sound-absorbent blade insulation to
attenuate mechanical noise while maintaining required ventilation performance.
- Frame Depth: 4″.
- Performance:
STC 12 / OITC 9
(typical performance; consult factory for project-specific acoustical data). - Free Area (48″ x 48″): 35%.
- Applications:
Generator enclosures, chiller plants, and mechanical rooms near residential zones.
A 4-inch acoustical louver (XL-4) typically achieves an STC rating of 12. If your noise study requires STC 18+, you must specify the 12-inch deep XAC-12 or install louvers in a dual-bank series.
⚠️ Selection Gotcha
United Enertech Hurricane Louvers
Models such as the D-HV-5 are specifically engineered for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) and carry official Miami-Dade County certification.
- Frame Depth: 5".
- Certifications: TAS 201 (Large Missile Impact), TAS 202 (Uniform Static Air Pressure), and TAS 203 (Cyclic Wind Pressure).
Miami-Dade NOA approvals for standard models (D-HV-5, WDV-130) are already in place. However, custom sizes or non-standard configurations require new NOA submissions, which take 3–6 months minimum and often extend to 8–12 months with revisions. Always specify standard NOA-approved sizes when possible to avoid project delays.
⚠️ Selection Gotcha
United Enertech Wind-Driven Rain Louvers
The United Enertech WDV-130 is a 5-inch vertical blade louver engineered for
critical facilities where water penetration must be virtually eliminated.
- Efficiency:
99.9% effectiveness at 50 mph wind and 8″ per hour rainfall. - Free Area (48″ x 48″): 48%.
- Pressure Drop:
0.17″ w.g. @ 1000 FPM.
United Enertech FEMA 361 & Blast Louvers
For safe rooms and high-security facilities, United Enertech offers both tornado-rated
and blast-rated louver solutions.
- FEMA-5 (Tornado Shelters):
5.5″ depth; withstands 15-lb 2×4 impact at 100 mph.
Meets ICC 500 and FEMA 361 criteria. - BRFL-D-4 (Blast Protection):
Engineered for refineries and chemical plants. Rated for specific PSI overpressure.
Requires security engineer blast parameters (PSI and impulse) for quotation.

United Enertech Louver FAQs
Can I buy United Enertech louvers direct from the factory?
No. United Enertech sells exclusively through authorized representatives like Knape Associates. We manage the official pricing, engineering submittals, and factory coordination.
Why are United Enertech louvers preferred for high-spec projects?
United Enertech products carry AMCA-certified ratings and rigorous Miami-Dade NOA approvals. This level of engineering ensures that the louver will perform as specified under extreme conditions.
What finish options are available for industrial environments?
Options include Mill (raw), Clear Anodized, and high-performance AAMA 2605 Kynar paint, which offers superior resistance to UV and salt-spray corrosion in coastal environments.
How is "Free Area" calculated?
Free area is the total open area of the louver through which air can pass. For a standard 48″x48″ FL-D-4, the free area is 50%, resulting in 8.0 net square feet of open area.
